DMEXCO 2018 – A Roundup

If you’re a corporate event veteran, September means one thing: DMEXCO in Cologne. The Digital Marketing Expo and Conference celebrated its 9th edition this past month, with 40,000 attendees and 1,100 exhibitors, making the Cologne event the largest congress trade fair for the digital industry in Europe. Conferences are almost always filled to capacity, and this year was no different: with a roster of speakers like Tim Alexander (Deutsche Bank), Pieter Haas (Media Saturn), Kim Kadlec (Visa), it’s no wonder most attendees arrived 45 minutes early to secure a good spot and resisted from taking bathroom breaks.

The Latest Trends

Apart from its large numbers, the trade show has also set the standard as the most important event for employees in the digital industry to see the latest trends, network, and discover the “next big thing”. And the “next big thing” was certainly discovered this year, in the name of AI. With artificial intelligence being the new digital marketer’s phrase of choice, it’s no surprise it dominated the start-up village and was almost impossible to avoid being mentioned in any session. Currently, marketers and IT professionals use AI to help reduce administrative headaches, so they can focus on more project-specified creative tasks, but at DMEXCO the topic of discussion was how the new technology could actually assist brands with said tasks. Demos of AI software that took a simple design sketch and developed it into completed creative content wowed attendees and highlighted new potentials for the still very new technology.  

Aside from this, much of the show’s focus was on personalizing customer experience, with brands shifting marketing tactics every year into a realm that requires a deeper level of customer understanding. Branching off of this vision of experience driven business, attendees were particularly interested in understanding how voice content can amplify and personalize customer experience. And lastly, with retail experience shifting more and more to the digital world, many sessions covered innovative ecommerce models for retailers, to adjust themselves to our ever-changing digital world.

As a general round up, it appears marketing and IT will soon morph into one, as digital experiences dominate human lives more and more. And although focus on innovative technology is imperative, it must combine itself with user connection in a seamless fashion to remain relevant in the constantly evolving digital market.
