With the festival’s origins dating back to the 1950’s, there’s no surprise the festival attracts an increasing amount of attendees every June to the coastal French city.
If you’re a corporate event veteran, September means one thing: DMEXCO in Cologne. The Digital Marketing Expo and Conference celebrated its 9th edition this past month, with 40,000 attendees and 1,100 exhibitors, making the Cologne event the largest congress trade fair for the digital industry in Europe. Conferences are almost always filled to capacity, and this year was no different: with a roster of speakers like Tim Alexander (Deutsche Bank), Pieter Haas (Media Saturn), Kim Kadlec (Visa), it’s no wonder most attendees arrived 45 minutes early to secure a good spot and resisted from taking bathroom breaks.

Planning to be part of this year’s event? Well, here’s some tips and advice for getting around and making your conference experience a breeze.
The nearest airport, Cologne (Köln), is an easy, short trip to both the conference center and the city centre. The well sign-posted Skytrain (take the S19 to Messe/Deutz) is an efficient 20-minute ride, followed by a short tram or taxi ride to the Koelnmesse conference center.
The same S19 Skytrain will take you to the city centre – alight at Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof).
If you fly into Dusseldorf, take the S11 Skytrain to Düsseldorf Central Station (Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof) and change for a non-stop intercity service to Köln Hauptbahnhof. Expect a journey time of approximately one hour.
Getting around Cologne is also easy with a single ticket covering the Metro and Trams – and with a well-connected system, you’ll get from A to B quickly; unless you prefer a leisurely walk.
Tickets can be purchased at KVB ticket vending machines (coins only accepted), or when you board the tram. Day tickets and tourist passes are also available.
Remember to validate your ticket at the start of your journey – look for red validating machines as your enter the vehicle.
When deciding where to stay, key in mind that Koelnmesse Conference Center is a 20-30 minute tram ride, across the Rhine River from the city centre. Trams 1, 3, 4 and 9 service this route.
